“There is a freedom in creating an abstract painting, a kind of lawlessness that is compelling and sometimes daunting. I get to set the rules and break them at will. “

My abstract paintings begin with an exercise in letting my hand drift across the canvas with freedom. I like to see where the paintbrush takes me. When the initial “scribble” is done, I step back and look. Patterns or figures begin to emerge, and from there I begin to craft things that might be recognizable. I love building layers of colors and shapes – a mix of free hand and linework, like the splatter of graffiti, harsh weather and time upon the symmetry of an ancient city wall.
